How to Download Music

Chances are, you know what an MP3 is, have heard of Apple’s iTunes music store, and know where to buy digital music. If you do not, follow these instructions.

  1. First: Decide which store to use

The iTunes music store is arguably the most popular location to legally download music. As of this writing, it is the number-one music vendor in the United States, including brick-and-mortar stores like F.Y.E. or your local record shop. While iTunes is extremely popular, some people dislike it because of DRM, or digital rights management, which means that once you download an MP3 from iTunes, there are limitations to how many times you can copy that file. Other stores for purchasing music online include the Amazon music store and Napster, which offers unlimited streaming for a flat monthly rate.

  2. Second: Access the store

If, for instance, you decide to use iTunes to download music, you first need to download the iTunes software to your computer. The software is found at http://www.itunes.com. After downloading the program, access the iTunes store by finding it in the left hand navigation column, and clicking “iTunes Store.” From here, browse the entire music library, search by artist, title, year, genre or album, and even download movies and music videos, or watch film trailers.

  3. Third: Buying and downloading

After you find the song or album you want to purchase, it is as simple as creating an account, clicking buy, and downloading to your computer. After downloading, the song immediately shows up in your iTunes library, and is ready to play.
